On the first day on our trip to the Mount Cardigan AMC Lodge, we all met at the high school to get on the bus and take an hour drive to go to Mount Cardigan, this was an example of movement because the bus drove from Hopkinton all the way to Alexandria. When we finally arrived at the lodge, everyone piled out and took a look at everything before entering the lodge. We examined how the whole house was powered by the solar panels that were on the grassy hill. Once we went inside, we took off our shoes, and ran up the stairs and met Mr. Woolner at the second floor to give us our room numbers. As soon as we got the three-digit number that was to be our room, the girls ran up to the third floor, while the boys made their way to the fourth. For the next hour, everyone claimed beds, unpacked bags, and examined everything on their floor. After that, we were told to go into the main field to learn who all the guides were, where they were from, and get our hiking groups. Once we knew what the hiking groups were, each group set out to take a small nature hike near the main lodge.

Each group went in a different direction. Some walked to the beaver dam, some went to do a hike up a carriage trail, and others went on a trail that led to old cellar holes. Our group went on the old carriage trail. The first time we stopped to sketch was when we found a salamander under a rotting log. As we continued up the steadily inclined trail, we found a small stream that got dammed up, and created a small pool of water about one and a half feet deep, we stopped to sketch this. We also found a gigantic boulder and learned from our guide, Andy, that it was called a glacial erratic that got moved by glaciers thousands of years before. At the end of the trail, we turned around and walked back past the small pool, and the glacial erratics, and onto a new trail where we saw one other group taking sketches. As we walked along the path, we saw some moose tracks, a dry river bed, and a small stream. Once it was time for dinner, all of the groups went back to the main lodge to eat.
